Do not choose shampoo capacity by trip length alone. Choose it by what you dispense at home. For one person, seven days could mean 25.2 ml, 28.8 ml, 56 ml, or something outside all three figures. Hair, routine, formula, water, activity, and sharing change the answer too much for “one week” to produce one honest number.
My practical answer is to make a seven-day usage card before departure. For seven ordinary days, record every shampoo, conditioner, body-wash, and lotion use. Then calculate amount per use × number of uses + reserve. I use a 20% reserve in the worked examples below as an editorial planning choice, not as a health, manufacturer, or travel-authority standard.
Short answer: In a hypothetical model, 3 ml of shampoo × 7 washes, plus a 20% reserve, equals 25.2 ml. A 30ml travel bottle may therefore be enough for that routine, with 4.8 ml of nominal headroom. The conclusion is limited to the stated 3 ml dose and seven uses; it does not prove that 30 ml suits another person, another shampoo, or actual bottle fill conditions.
Day 0: empty the assumptions before filling a bottle
When people ask me how much shampoo for a week—or, more specifically, “is 30ml shampoo enough for a week?”—I start by removing the false precision. Hair length and thickness affect how widely product must be distributed. Wash frequency changes the multiplier. A concentrated formula may need a smaller dose than a runny or less concentrated one. Hard water can change lather and rinsing behaviour. Swimming, sweaty training, dusty work, or humid weather may add washes. A shared bottle turns one routine into two.
Even the word “pump” is not a measurement until it is calibrated. Different pumps deliver different volumes, and a partial press is not a full press. Likewise, grams and millilitres are not interchangeable by default: one measures mass and the other volume, and product density varies. For travel packing, measure liquid volume directly rather than assuming that a kitchen-scale reading in grams equals the same number of millilitres.
Your card can be a note on paper or a phone. Give it four rows—shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion—and columns for Days 1 through 7. Add a “dose” field, a total-uses field, a calculated requirement, the capacity selected, and the amount left after the trip. This one card carries the decision from bathroom to packing day and then back home.
Days 1–7: record volume, not impressions
One home method is to put a known volume into a clean container that seals securely, is compatible with the formula, and is explicitly permitted by the product manufacturer; use it normally for seven days, then measure the remainder. A graduated measuring cup is only for the brief measurement step, never the seven-day storage bottle. If suitable transfer and storage are not clearly allowed, leave the formula in its original dispenser and use the calibrated-pump method instead: collect a fixed number of full pumps briefly in a clean graduated measure, read the volume, divide it by the number of pumps, and count pumps during the week. Follow the product's handling directions and do not return measured product to the original pack.
Record the event when it happens. “Probably one pump each day” becomes unreliable by Day 5. Note extra washes after exercise and whether anyone else used the bottle. If your chosen week is unusually quiet but the trip includes daily swimming, adjust the planned use count rather than pretending the week is representative.
Do not decant every formula. Keep prescription products in the form required by their label and travel rules. Preserve original packaging when identification, directions, ingredients, batch details, child-resistant closure, or a measured dose matters. Products with active ingredients, light-sensitive formulas, or packaging-specific stability may need their original opaque or airless container. If the manufacturer says not to transfer it, that ends the experiment.
Three sample itineraries show why a single answer fails
The following sample itineraries are hypothetical editorial models. They are not my trips, customer results, or claims about average use. Their inputs exist only to demonstrate the arithmetic.
Sample itinerary A — short hair, daily wash. The card records seven shampoo uses at a calibrated 3 ml each. Base requirement: 3 ml × 7 = 21 ml. Editorial reserve: 21 ml × 20% = 4.2 ml. Packing amount: 25.2 ml. Under these inputs, a 30 ml bottle may be enough. The limit is obvious: increase the real dose to 5 ml and the same seven washes become 35 ml before any reserve.
Sample itinerary B — long, thick hair, alternate-day washing. The model records four shampoo uses at 6 ml each. Base requirement: 6 ml × 4 = 24 ml. A 20% reserve adds 4.8 ml, producing 28.8 ml. A nominal 30 ml capacity may work, but only 1.2 ml remains between the model and the stated capacity. That is thin tolerance for inaccurate filling, an extra wash, or a larger real dose, so I would test the exact bottle and formula rather than call it comfortably sufficient.
Sample itinerary C — shared shampoo. Two people together use 8 ml per day across seven daily washes: 8 ml × 7 = 56 ml before reserve. One 30 ml chamber is plainly too small for that input. With my illustrative 20% reserve, the target becomes 67.2 ml. A 60 ml bottle still falls short; a 90 ml bottle or another tested arrangement would be the more defensible example choice. Sharing must be recorded as total dispensed volume, not divided away because only one container is packed.
Do not copy the shampoo number into the other three rows
Conditioner, body wash, and lotion have different application areas and frequencies. A person might wash hair four times, condition only the ends four times, shower seven times, and apply body lotion twice. Another might condition daily and use lotion morning and night. One “5 ml per toiletry” shortcut hides those differences.
Run the same formula independently for each row: measured amount per use × expected uses + your chosen reserve. Conditioner may track hair length more strongly than shampoo. Body-wash use can change with whether a washcloth, sponge, or hands are used. Lotion depends on whether it is for face, hands, or the whole body. Product concentration and dispenser output matter in every row.
So 30 ml may cover the 25.2 ml model and only narrowly cover the 28.8 ml model, while it plainly cannot hold the 56 ml shared-use base amount. These results belong only to the stated hypothetical doses and use counts; they are not universal consumption guidance.
Packing day: turn the card into a bottle choice
Once each row has a target, your travel toiletry bottle size decision becomes a matter of rounding up to a container that can hold it without overfilling. As practical examples, the calculated 25.2 ml and 28.8 ml models can point to 30 ml, while the 67.2 ml shared-use model needs more than 60 ml and can point to 90 ml. A 100 ml bottle is another illustrative upper-size option when a separately measured requirement exceeds 90 ml but remains at or below 100 ml. These are examples, not a claim that every market, brand, or bottle line uses the same capacity ladder.
Two bottles can be better than one when the required amount exceeds one chamber, when two people need separate labelled products, or when splitting use reduces the consequence of one closure problem. But two containers consume more of the transparent liquids-bag space and create another cap and label to manage. A larger 90 or 100 ml container uses fewer pieces but may be bulky for a low-volume formula. Capacity is only half the packing calculation; external shape and the rest of the liquids bag matter too.
For U.S. carry-on screening, the Transportation Security Administration's current 3-1-1 guidance says liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less per container, inside a single quart-size clear plastic zip-top bag, with one bag per passenger. A 30 ml container satisfies that single-container capacity ceiling, but this does not mean TSA endorses or pre-approves the specific product. It must still fit in the single quart-size bag with the passenger's other liquids and remain subject to screening at the checkpoint. TSA also says an otherwise generally permitted item may receive additional screening or be refused if it raises a security concern. Check the rules for every departure and connection country; TSA governs U.S. screening, not the whole world.
Label every refillable bottle with the product name and, where useful, the user. Clean and dry it according to its instructions before changing products; residue can contaminate the next fill or make identification misleading. Fill without exceeding the marked capacity, close every component fully, wipe the exterior, and test the assembled container upright and inverted at home. A protective pouch is still sensible because no closure claim removes every risk from pressure, damage, poor assembly, or residue on a seal.
Where four fixed 30 ml chambers help—and where they do not
During a product-page check on July 21, 2026, I found that the HomeUseBuy 4-in-1 Travel Dispenser Bottle is presented as four independent 30 ml bottles held in one dispenser body. The page names shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion as common fills, shows a four-step process—pull up the lid, fill the inner bottles, align them in the case, and twist the base closed—and describes the unit as refillable and reusable.
The organisational advantage is clear: four named liquids stay together instead of becoming four loose shapes in a wash bag. Each chamber also gives a hard budgeting boundary. If the card says shampoo 25.2 ml, conditioner 18 ml, body wash 29 ml, and lotion 12 ml, the arrangement is easy to understand. Its combined nominal liquid capacity is 4 × 30 ml = 120 ml, but those chambers are not a shared 120 ml pool. You cannot move unused lotion capacity into a shampoo chamber without changing what you pack.
That fixed capacity is the main limitation. Sample itinerary C needs at least 56 ml of shampoo before reserve, so one 30 ml chamber cannot serve it. A person who uses 8 ml of body wash seven times would likewise need 56 ml before reserve. Meanwhile, a 5 ml lotion requirement leaves much of its chamber unused. The integrated case may reduce loose-bottle clutter, yet its outside body—not merely the 120 ml liquid total—must still fit alongside every other liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, and paste in the required transparent bag.
The seller currently describes each 30 ml bottle as lasting “5–7 days” and uses both “TSA-Approved” and “TSA-Ready,” alongside “leak-proof,” as marketing language on the product page. Treat all of these as seller claims, not guarantees or TSA endorsement. Five to seven days depends on the usage card. Being at or below 100 ml only meets the 3-1-1 single-container ceiling; the dispenser must still go inside the passenger's single quart-size clear zip-top bag and remain subject to checkpoint screening. I would buy on measured fit and useful organisation, not on those phrases alone.
My buy / do-not-buy line
Buy this type of 4 × 30 ml organiser if your home card places each of four compatible products at or below 30 ml, you value keeping them in one body, and the assembled unit fits your complete liquids bag. It is particularly coherent when shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion all fall close enough to that fixed chamber size that little capacity is wasted.
Do not buy it for this trip if any essential liquid needs materially more than 30 ml, you want to allocate capacity flexibly between products, you use original-pack-only or prescription/active/light-sensitive items, or the case crowds out other required liquids. Choose a tested 60, 90, or 100 ml example size, two labelled bottles, checked baggage where appropriate, or the original compliant pack according to the actual requirement and applicable rules.
Before ordering, compare your completed card with the four 30 ml limits on the product page. If all four rows fit and the organiser works within your transparent-bag plan, it is a sensible candidate. If one row fails, believe the measurement and choose another capacity.
Return day: the leftover is your next data point
Do not label the bottle “perfect” or “wrong” from one trip. Record the remaining amount beside each row, plus any unusual event: hotel shampoo used once, a skipped wash, an extra swim, a shared shower, or product spilled during dispensing. Then calculate approximate actual use as starting amount minus measurable remainder, while noting any known loss.
If 25.2 ml was packed and 9 ml returns, the trip consumed about 16.2 ml under those circumstances. That does not prove the next trip needs exactly 16.2 ml; it tells you that the original assumptions or reserve were generous. If the chamber emptied on Day 6, note whether the dose, use count, sharing, or leakage caused it before jumping to a bigger bottle. Change one model input with evidence.
After two or three comparable records, a pattern is more useful than a universal web answer. Perhaps daily shampoo consistently fits 30 ml but body wash does not. Perhaps a concentrated conditioner barely moves while hard-water destinations push shampoo use upward. Keep the card with your packing list, clean and dry reusable containers as directed, and let the next fill reflect what actually happened.
That is the whole method: measure a normal week, calculate each product separately, respect the fixed chamber, and learn from what comes home. When choosing travel bottles for a 7 day trip, use the number your card supports instead of a generic one-week guess. Then go enjoy the week.
